HARRY
VAN DINE
Born Harold VanDine, in Connecticut, USA, in 1930
Harry won a full tuition scholarship to Yale College, where
he studied architecture, receiving a Bachelors degree, and a commission
as an officer in the United States Navy, in 1952. In 1958, after
three years’ active service in the Navy, he received his Masters
from the School of Architecture, also at Yale, graduating at the
top of his class and earning the William Wirt Winchester Traveling
Fellowship, the Silver Medal for Excellence in Architecture, from
the Connecticut AIA, and a traditional architectural school honor,
the Henry Adams Book Award.
The following years were fully occupied in the professional practice
of architecture, as the prime designer in a succession of several
significant Detroit area firms, during which time buildings under
his design direction won over 50 significant awards. Mr. Van Dine
was elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows
in 1980, and received Gold Medals from the Detroit Chapter, AIA
in 1987, and the Michigan AIA in 1991, both in the category of Design.
After
retiring, Harry has shifted the center of his artistic interests
from architecture to oil painting. Whereas before he had to understand
and respond to the physical and psychological needs of human beings
for the design and creation of buildings FOR them, now his
paintings explore the physical and psychological elements OF human
beings.
During the winter months of 1996 thru 2000, Harry studied painting
with Keith Keller, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and took classes
when in Michigan with such valuable resources as Bob Wilbert, George
Hriczik, and Joe Maniscalco.
