Harry VanDine's work is predominantly figurative and invariably realistic. It is beautifully painted and essentially representational with subtle surrealistic overtones. It covers a wide variety of subjects, but almost always returns to larger than life images of hands, faces and other body part images. What at a distance are paintings of very large scaled hands, upon closer look become neighborhoods or landscapes. By imaginatively combining the hands with other elements the paintings take on a surreal quality. His work introduced varying directions, such as oversized and partial faces which trigger emotional responses and hand-like forms which are found in nature. His current work merges hands with music.
