Harry VanDine's work is predominantly figurative and invariably
realistic. It is beautifully painted and essentially representational
with subtle surrealistic overtones. It covers a wide variety of
subjects, but almost always returns to larger than life images of hands, faces and
other body part images. What at a distance are
paintings of very large scaled hands, upon closer look become neighborhoods
or landscapes. By imaginatively combining the hands with other elements the paintings take on a surreal quality.
His work introduced varying directions, such as oversized
and partial faces which trigger emotional responses and hand-like
forms which are found in nature. His current work merges hands with music. The total body of work seeks to broaden
the exploration of expression. They are
whimsical, puzzling and highly enjoyable environments.
